Internship (m/f) 80-100% - Enhancing algorithms for preserving detail in sheet metal flange unfolding

The objective of this internship is to improve a feature in our software that allows the unfolding or unbending of sheet metal parts. In the current implementation, all details (e.g., embossments) are lost from the unfolded surface. In the future, we aim to allow users to designate specific areas to remain intact after the unfolding process. The feature provides two options to calculate unfolded surfaces: A geometric algorithm (faster, but less accurate) and a physical approach (slower, but more accurate) using a one-step finite element solver. The primary focus is on the physical approach, with potential extension to the geometric approach if time permits.

Your tasks

  • Finding suitable boundary conditions for the solver
  • Developing necessary post-processing steps (e.g. translation/rotation of preserved detail)
  • The implementation will be in C++

Your profile

  • Sound knowledge of OO analysis, design and programming
  • Good programming skills in C++
  • Strong technical interest, willingness to get involved in complex technical issues
  • Interest in working with geometry modifications (meshes, faces, shells)
  • Team Player with a strong commitment to problem solving
  • Good knowledge of English required. German would be a plus
